Fractionated Laser Therapy

Fractionated Laser therapy can be used to treat wrinkles, scarring including acne scarring, stretch marks, and to rebuild collagen in the skin. It can be used on most areas of the body incuding face chest arms and hands. It is usuallyy done as a course of 4 to 6 treatments depending upon the strength of the laser, the depth of treatment and the degree of the problem.

What is Fractionated Laser

At Jeune we use the Palomar Lux 1540 Fractional Non Ablative Laser. This probably doesn’t mean much to you.  The term fractional laser or fraxel is a method of delivering the laser therapy. In the past we have treated the whole skin at once, causing many side effects, lots of time off work and often a worry that we will never look normal again. We were also only able to treat the face but not the body. The term fractionated laser, means we treat the skin in small dots or microbeams so we only treat a percentage of the skin at any one time. This means we keep the skin intact and reduce the side effects and healing time.

There are many types of lasers that use the fractionated method of delivering the laser. Some fractionated lasers are deeper than others and cause more side effects but can get more dramatic results. This is where the terms ablative and non ablative fractionated lasers are used. Some ablative fractionated laser treatments actually cause the skin to become red and raw. Non ablative fractionated laser means the outer layer of the skin stays intact. So although you do get red and swollen for 24 to 48hours the skin is not raw  thus promoting faster healing and reducing problems suchas infection. It also means you are not embarrassed to go out in public.

Is the treatment painful?

The treatment is not painful but is uncomfortable. A specialised numbing cream is applied to the area for at least 20 minutes prior to treatment. After the treatment the face is red, swollen, warm and tight for a few hours. Ice and soothing gels e.g. aloe can be applied.

Will I need time off work?

You would not be able to return to work immediately after treatment, if it is on your face. On other areas of the body that can be covered it is fine to return to work. You are usually swollen and red for the first 48hours. The skin stays a pinkish or slightly bronzed color for up to a week but this can be easily covered by makeup. If you were to have the treatment on a Friday evening it would be fine to return to work on the Monday.

How often do I need treatments?

Treatments are done every 3 to 6 weeks

When will I notice results?

You can see a result immediately but this is usually due to the swelling in the face. The results take up to eight weeks to start showing and will continue to improve for up to six months after treatment has finished.

Is there any special aftercare?

We advise for the week or two after treatment you only use gentle cleansers and moisturisers. If you use glycolic product or retin A to stop using these. We advise that it is best to keep the area out of the sun whilst healing and if on the face to wear a 30plus sunscreen
